One weekend in December, I was drunkenly flicking through the XBL Store and found myself buying this game. I loved Afterburner back in the day, in both the arcades, and on the Spectrum, and this seemed like a similar game with the HD button pressed.
The game play itself holds up to the original and can only be described as hectic. You essentially have the option of flying in a the F/A-18E, a F14D Super Tomcat or the F-15E. Each you can customise with 4 different paint jobs.
You then fly through multiple levels, ranging through day/night, snow caps, volcanoes, cityscapes and various others. Each level is essentially the same, there are enemies, shoot them down/blow then up, the more you destroy, the higher the multiplier gets, and you unlock the Climax bar. Once full you can hold the button down, and you get a couple of seconds of slow mo, which allows you to aim a little better.
The game itself isn’t very long, in fact you a single run through will take around 20 minutes or so. The game does however entice you to play through again, not only does it have leader boards, but it has unlocks for doing certain things, for example you can unlock auto guns, auto missiles, full speed, etc. Another reason to play through again is the achievement….this is a very easy 200 points. I probably played through the game about 8 times to unlock the relevant unlocks to allow me to get all the achievements…but you know what, it was an easy, fun to play game, and didn’t really mind.
All in all, a take you brain out, mash the buttons type game, and not bad if you want to play something without really having to think.
