I grew up watching Back to the Future, and watched it so many times I could probably recite the entire script at the drop of a hat, so as you can imagine finding out there was a Back to the Future game coming out…I was all over that. The only thing that put me off slightly was that fact that it was a point and click adventure…not that I have a problem with that genre, I’m just no good at them.
The story is based 6 months after the events in Back to the Future 3 and starts with a familiar scene from the first Back to the Future film where Doc sends Einstein 1 minute into the future in the Twin Pines Mall, you do get a few conversation choices, of which I picked the correct ones from the film….it’d been rude not too 🙂
The story runs you through around 4 hours of gameplay over a number of key locations, which you will get to interact with a bunch of well know characters from the Back to the Future universe. For obvious spoiler reasons I don’t want to tell you where, who or when…you’ll have to find out yourself.
I will however say that Christopher Lloyd did the voice of Doc, and I have to say, the guy who voices Marty (A.J. Locascio) does a cracking job!
There was even some Huey Lewis in there for good measure, it was the track ‘Back in Time’, however I think I’d have like to also hear ‘The Power of Love’ too
Now to my problem with point and click adventures, the movement controls suck. I often found myself walking into things as the camera angle changed, or I’d be trying to walk into an invisible wall which was stopping me getting where I needed to be, this and the fact that they make me feel really dumb. If you’re stuck you can get up to 3 hint….the first will be quite generic and points you in the right direction, the second will be more specific, something on the lines of ‘dude, remember what you did last time, maybe try something like that’, and the third with be ‘dude, just do <insert what to do here>, you thicko!’. I unfortunately had to get the third hint on more that one occasions, and remember thinking….’I would have never thought of that!’
I guess if I was more familiar with point and click adventures, non of the ‘problems’ would have been a problem I guess, so can’t really blame the game for that. I’ve got the other 4 episodes on my virtual steam ‘pile of shame’ so look forward to playing through them soon and concluding the story.
