When I bought my 3DS XL, this was one of the other games apart from Transformer : Animated : The Game which I felt I needed in my life before the Year of Shame Challenge began back in September 2012. After being quite disappointed in the game adaptation of the cartoon series with Transformers, I didn’t have high hopes with this.
First of all, if you’re a fan of Batman, and haven’t seen the three seasons of Batman : The Brave and the Bold Cartoon, stop reading now and go and enjoy. The cartoon series would essentially be, villain of the week, with Batman having a helper of the week to defeat said villain. Luckily they’ve kept the same format with the game.
The game is a side scrolling beat ’em up, which plays like a lot of the older games from my childhood, like TMNT, Target Renegade and even the earlier Duke Nukem games.
There are eight levels in total with around six to seven sub levels consisting of various platforming challenges, with various themed enemies, a mini boss around half way through, which concludes with a boss battle.
Upon starting a level you are met by another hero who just happens to be in the vicinity, and you run though the level together in a drop-in/drop-out style. Each of these heroes has their own unique ability allowing them to get past certain obstacles. Playable characters are Aquaman, Batman, Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, Hal Jordan, Plastic Man and Red Tornado, and you simply switch between Batman and the hero by tapping the bottom screen. In addition, if you manage to get a ten hit combo in, you join with your hero to do an extreme move which takes out all enemies on the screen. At the end of each level and once the boss is defeated, you simply shake hands and go you’re own way.
As you run through the levels you pick up gold bat coins which can be used to upgrade Batman back at the Batcave once you’ve completed your current mission. Theses are items like armour upgrades, double batarang, lightening fist etc.
If collectables are your thing, you can pick up holograms of all the characters in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and don’t worry if you miss any, you have the option to replay any of the missions again. If your more of a challenge person, finishing the mission will also unlock a series of challenges to give the game that extra bit of playability.
Now I will put my hand up and say I’ve not played a lot of Nintendo DS games, however one thing that always tends to annoy me is being forced to use the touch sreen in a ‘fun’ way, which a simple button press would have worked just as well. This game in my opinion does it right. You tap to change characters, tap to bust out the power combo move, and slide the bottom section left of right to choose which piece of equipment is in use…and all these can be done simply without even needing to use the stylus.
Put simply, if you’re a Batman fan, have a device capable of playing Nintendo DS games, go buy this game, yeah it’s short, yeah it’s easy, but it’s captures the humour, action and fun of the TV series perfectly.
