So I’ve just finished the single player of Battlefield 3 and have to say I was pretty underwhelmed with the whole experience.
On the plus side, unlike Modern Warfare 3 the story seemed to be a little more focused, granted I’ve only just finished it but I’ve got a good idea what the game was about, the main goal, and the characters names.
The graphics were amazing, so good infact that the Xbox would occasionally stutter. I’m not sure if this is a result of installing the additional High Res textures from the 2nd disk or not, but I was willing to live with it for the improved graphics.
The sound was amazing, once again I played it through the Turtle Beach DPX21 headphones and it sounded crisp and full, every weapon sounded realistic.
Now the gameplay, it’s mainly run and gun….clear out an area, move on, rinse and repeat. I would however saw that the enemy seemed to be a bit of a bullet sponge. If you didn’t kill them with a headshot, they would normally get back up start shooting back. This became a little annoying, however there were enough guns and ammo in the game to empty an entire clip into each guy.
There were a few levels that really stood out, you were in a <insert name of plane here>, which started on an aircraft carrier. You started below deck, made your way unto the flight deck, and then jumped in the back of the plane, did the pre flight checks then took off. You were unfortunately only the gunner however had control of the missiles, flares and the rail gun. The mission ran through taking off, shooting many planes out of the sky, flying through flack and clouds and then eventually landing back on the aircraft carrier. The mission was only about 15 minutes long, but it was visually amazing…I would happily pay for 8+ hours of that.
Although that particular mission blew me away, the rest were just very samey. I even found some of them a tad annoying as they there seemed to be issues with clipping, on occasions bullets would happily travel through walls…however only 1 way…towards me. The annoyance was increased due to the distance between save point, I would occasionally find myself playing 5 minutes of game again due to the previous checkpoint being so far away.
Another annoyance was the quicktime events, you’d walk into a room, somebody would attack you from behind, and you’d spend a minute or so, hitting A, B, X, RT, LB…..it’s a first person shooter….not a God of War game ! I wouldn’t mind if it was a one off, but I’m sure there were 10+ quicktime events, and I found it took me out of the gaming experience.
Unfortunately due to this being a rental and EA being money grabbing I was unable to experience the multiplayer, which is a pity as I’ve heard great things about. You don’t get access to the multiplayer, the my soldier, the battle feed or even co-op. I could have forked out 800 points for an online pass, but knowing how little I play online I didn’t think it was worth it. Maybe when it’s dropped below the £20 mark I’ll pick up a copy.
All in all a reasonable single player experience, visually stunning, but just missing a something, either that or I’m just getting a little burnt out on modern day first person shooters.
