I originally started playing Battlefield 4 when it was launched last year, however due to the renowned ‘save bug’ I managed to lose over five hours worth of story progress, which made me rage quit and sent it back to the rental company. EA then launched the EA Access program, and made this game one of the launch titles, so I decided to give it another blast.
I started from scratch a second time, and remember being blown away by the audio and visuals. With it being almost a year since I’d previously played, most of the story was a dim distant memory, so I buckled down to get the game finally complete and off the pile of shame.
After a lengthy gaming session, I managed to get back to my original save point, hoping a lot of the bugs had been squashed, I saved it to pick it up the following night to get another couple of missions in. According to a walkthrough, I only had one mission left, so saved it for the next evening. The following evening came, fired up the game, and Noooooo! it had ‘lost’ the previous nights progress putting me back another two hours. After a small paddy, some few chosen swear words, I decided to simply play through to the end, and finally put this game to rest…and that is exactly what I’ve just done.
The game itself is tough, I only played on normal, but the amount of bullet sponge enemies, the various snipers, the ever so accurate grenade throwers, tanks, helicopters trying to remove your head with a bullet made each level extremely challenging, and made me have to sit back and work out the best way through the level instead of simply running and gunning. This wouldn’t have been too bad if the save points had been a little more generous, however there were a number of occasions when I would have to replay up to twenty minutes at a time due to foolishness.
Visually and audibly, the game was pretty special, even if it is a year old now, it does make me quite excited for what’s still to come on the next generation consoles.
Story wise, the game was ok, there was quite a linear story arc which easy to follow, however in my opinion left some questions with the ending (happy to chat with somebody to discuss my thought on the ending)
Finally the multiplayer, I had a fair few games last year when I has it on rental, and it was pretty manic with some of the larger maps, player controller vehicles flying around the streets, destructible buildings and a hell of a lot of snipers made it both very fun and rather annoying at the same time.
All in all, if it wasn’t for the really annoying save game bug making me play at least two of the levels three times, the fact that some of the save points were brutal, this would have been a decent way to spend a day, gaming in your pants.
