The Minerva’s Den DLC takes place at the same time as the events from Bioshock 2, however you take control of a experimental Big Daddy Sigma unit.
The game plays very much like Bioshock 2, similar upgrades, plasmid and tonics. Having learnt a few lessons from Bioshock 2, I was able to re-roll my character, and not waste upgrades as I did in the main game. As well as the familiar items, there were also a handful of new weapons, one of which being the Ion Canon. This was basically a beam weapon with a long fire duration. The drones also got an upgrade, seeing models with ion canons, rocket launchers and electric. Playing the game as I did (hacked everything), it was great to have a team of bots doing my work for me.
The game felt very streamlined and slick, you didn’t buy the upgrades for your weapons, you simply found them with a little exploration. ADAM wasn’t only harvested from bodies, but also found in what looked to be some type of sea slug, making the whole upgrading process very fast. It felt like they’d managed to compact a 12-15 hour game into a 4 hour slot, allowing me to complete it in one sitting.
For me, the best thing about the DLC was the story telling. In the same as the previous game, it was told via narration and audio logs, however it was very refined and focused, helping to tell a very rich, and can I say, emotional story. So much so, once the end credits rolled, I sat back and reflected on the game, thinking ‘wow, what a story’.
All in all, a great piece of DLC, knowing what I know now, I’m tempted to drop back in and play from my new perspective.
