I’ve had my eye of Bulletstorm for a while now, due to the fact that your forced to “Kill with skill”. Although I enjoy first person shooters, I find online gaming quite frustrating, as other players seem to master the sniper head shot, or the stealth assassination, which for me (the idiot running around in the middle of the map getting killed every few seconds) isn’t fun. This game however puts a different spin on it. A standard kill will only get you 10 points, a headshot 100 points, however you can get a couple of hundred points if you do “Kill with Skill”. These points are then uses as the ingame currency to allow you to buy upgrades and ammo.
Now the story itself is pretty good, it’s easy to follow, it does have a few twists and turns, but nothing to complicated. Without giving any spoilers, you end up on a planet, which you need to escape from, and over the course of 7 chapters, the story unfolds. You play as Grayson Hunt, with your colleague Ishi Sato and fight your way through the planet. On the way you meet varies friends/foes and some hellish enemies. Most of the time it’s simply a “We need to get to there, we have to go through here….kill everything in your path”. Now you can just walk through the game, shoot everybody in the body / head and get a minimal score, which inturn will leave you out of ammo and skint, or you can “Kill with Skill”. So, going for a headshot will get you an extra 100 points, in a throat, 50 points….kick them into a spiked fence….100 points, and these can get up to 500 points for some of the more extreme multiple kills.
As well as having your weapons, you have a leash on your hand (kind like an electric whip) which can be used to pickup ammo, pull enemies to you or used for various plot points during the game. I guess my main use for it was…..stand behind a spiked fence, then pull your enemies towards you getting an instant 100 points. After each stage you can spend your points on ammo and weapons upgrades, you can also switch your weapons at these points.
The game itself is fast paced (a little too fast paced at some points) and is defiantly not for the faint hearted. I think the best way to describe Bulletstorm is a first person Gears of War on steroids ! The game is insane !
The graphics are pretty good, it looks very much like Gears of War, but a lot more vivid.
So…why only 4 / 5 ? Well the game glitched on me a couple of times, and I mean major glitches. 1 made me to a full level again because Ishi didn’t kick down a sign, which meant I was trapped. Another glitch cased me to be walking outside a tunnel on thin air, and was unable to get back in.
Now a major gripe, this game would have been a perfect co-op game, throughout the entire game there is always more than 1 team member on screen, so why couldn’t this have been a co-op game. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was designed as a co-op game, and then pulled at the last minutes….they really should have left in it. The game is an absolute rollercoaster ride, and would have been so much more enjoyable if I could have experienced it with somebody else.
Once the game is complete, you can start running through the “Echos”, these are snippets of the levels which you run through, which then compares your time and score against any Xbox live friends that have the game, perfect if your a competitive player.
There is also the multiplayer too, which seems a lot fairer than other games, and I got take out by a lot less headshots.
All in all a decent game, I suggest playing it in bite size chunks (probably a chapter at a time) otherwise it does feel a little samey. Once they release a patch to fix some of the glitches, and maybe add the co-op as a DLC, this would be pretty much perfect.
