I’ve just finished the single player campaign, and have to say I really enjoyed it!
I’d heard a lot of mixed reviews, some saying it was great, other that it was meh!, so thought it best to check it out for myself.
Well last week Lovefilm were kind enough to send me a game in my High Priority list (which makes a bloody change), and today I finally got chance to play.
First thing I have to say about this game is just how good it looked, it looked f**king amazing. I was playing this game thinking…”Will we every need a next gen console, as this looked pretty damn realistic”, the lighting, water and weather effects looked mind blowing. I did however find it was a pity I didn’t get to explore more of the world, due to the “keep moving mechanic” meaning I had to rush past most of the beautiful scenery.
The story was told in true Call of Duty fashion, it cut from story to story, while managing to keep to an underlying story. This one seemed a little easier to follow than the other, and came to a great conclusion. I have to say, this story gripped me, and I played through the entire game in one sitting. The downside however that this is a play once story, as once you’ve played it, you know whats coming, which I guess would kill off a lot of the suspense if you wanted to play through a second or third time.
The gameplay itself was fast paced, sometimes a little fast paced to be honest, and found myself pausing the game on more than one occasion to get a little timeout. One slight annoyance with the game was the same “we’ll keep spawning until you hit the next checkpoint” mechanic, which all COD games seem to have. This is fine if you know about it, however if your new to the COD series, you could spend hours sat camping, attempting to clear out an area, only to have the enemy just keep spawning in. Each level did however bring it’s own unique flavour, bringing different weapons, locations, vehicles and massive explosions to the table.
There was one particular mission where they hit everything perfect, you had big arse guns, hundreds of enemies and Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” playing as the musical track !….Just perfect !
So..once the game is over, it drops you straight into Zombies…which was fun, however I’ve never found Zombies that enjoyable as a single player. This leads me to my one niggle about Black Ops…why oh why don’t they have a co-op mode ? (in the main game, not Zombies), there wasn’t a single mission that couldn’t have been done in co-op.
As for the normal multiplayer, I attempted to have a quick play, however as 2 map packs have now come out, I wasn’t able to join a game due to not having the correct maps……meh!
As a single player, this games defiantly gets a 5/5, and only wish I could sit and watch somebody play through it, as I could get to see all the scenery I actually missed.
Approx Time taken to beat – 8 hours
Difficulty setting – Regular
Score – [Rating:5/5]
