As I really enjoyed Call of Duty : Black Ops 2, I had high hope for this, but unfortunately the game itself was quite disappointing.
The story itself wasn’t bad, seemed to be easy enough to follow, and mainly kept with the same characters. However it’s been less than a week since I completed it, and I can’t remember a single name. This is probably due to the fact that you didn’t need to think as you were told to do everything, which got a little tedious after a while being told, do this, go there, come here, shoot that.
Visually it wasn’t great either, it felt like this game had been developed for the Xbox 360, and then the HD button simply pressed for the Xbox One version. I know there was a lot more that went into it that that, but I wouldn’t use this game to demo what the next generation of gaming looks like.
Then there’s the gameplay, call me old fashioned, but I want my first person shooter games to be exactly that, shooters. Start a level, get from checkpoint to checkpoint, until the mission/level is complete. What I felt didn’t work with this game was there were too many distractions, whether they be controlling a dog, or controlling a remote control sniper, or calling in an air strike, or dodging sharks. I guess Infinity Ward where just trying not to churn out another Call of Duty game, but what it did for me was keep pulling me out of the game as I tried to work out what to do, it was almost like they tried too hard this time.
The game wasn’t all bad, some of the level designs where quite interesting, and some of the underwater stealthier mission and space missions felt pretty good, but the rest just seemed to be the same as we’ve previously seen and I was quite bored by the end.
If this is what the future holds for the Call of Duty franchise, I’ll probably give the next one a miss.
