After playing Crysis 2, I had low expectations for this game. Crysis for me was an amazing experience, Crysis 2 totally changed direction, and became a linear COD clone, this game for me, was more of the same, but seemed to work this time.
The story and gameplay were very linear, picking up shortly after the events of Crysis 2. The storytelling however felt a lot more engaging, there were very few twists and turns, and within the first hour of playing, you’d pretty much worked out the end game. The game is pretty short, I managed to complete the game in a little under seven hours, granted I wasn’t picking up collectables unless they were right in front of my face, so I guess if you were picking these up, it could add a little time to your playthrough.
Now I did play through this game on easy, simply because I wanted to get through the story, and didn’t want to get annoyed at any frustrating battles. Realistically, I could have flown through the game on normal without issue, and possibly even on hard (easy was a little too easy). I guess there were a few boss battles which could have been quite challenging, however apart from that, the game would have been quite a breeze.
Graphically, this game was stunning, the CryENGINE® 3 really is an amazing engine, and was able to display amazing visuals with very little frame rate issues. These were shown off in multiple environments, from large cities to jungles levels.
I know I complained how Crysis 2 had become a COD clone, however with my trying to rush through my old generation pile of shame, the linear gameplay, and short story mission were well received.
Not really much else to say, it just shows that when you go in with low expectations, you can be pleasantly surprised, and a great little pallet cleanser after an Assassin’s Creed game.
