As you may have read from my previous posts, I do love me a bit of tower defense. There’s something very rewarding about having the towers set up ‘right’ and being able to sit back and watch all the enemies get mowed down.
Defense Grid 2 is essentially the same as the first Defense Grid, with prettier graphics, and a few bells and whistles, but doesn’t detract from the solid foundation they already had.
As with the first, you have waves of aliens, attempting to take your cores, and with each level you’ll have various towers to block the paths of the enemies and take out all of the waves. Do this right and you’ll get a gold medal on the level.
A few welcome additions they’ve included in this are :-
- A live overlayed leaderboard on the HUD with graphs. This for me was something that would keep me retrying a level over and over again to chase the score above me on the leaderboard.
- Random drop upgrades to the towers. Reading through the forums, it seems that randomly you may get an upgrade to one of your towers upon completing a level. This for me was a game changer as I got an upgrade to my missles that slowed down enemies. Until I got this, I was struggling to get gold on a few of the levels, however once I’d equipped it, I was able to breeze the levels.
As with the first game, there’s a kind of story, if you listen to the various AI’s narrating, however for me it wasn’t really that engrossing, or really enhanced anything I was doing. On occasions it was actually more annoying listening to the same narration over and over again when I was struggling with a particular level.
Once you’ve completed the game (or before if that’s your thing) you have the option to replay any of the twenty one levels in various different challenge modes, for example ‘fixed resources’ and ‘grinder’ modes. There was the addition to coop in this, however after a few games with C, it felt a little frustrating and made the level quite difficult as we spent the time fighting for resources and our own way of doing things.
All in all, a very fun game, and I look forward to additional maps being added in future DLC.
