Once completing Dragon Age : Origins, I’d planned on waiting a while before playing Awakening just so I had something to go back to if I felt the need.. However I saw it on Amazon cheap and just had to get it.
The game starts a little after the main Dragon Age : Origins storyline. You start with your character from the first game, at the same level, with the same gear and talents, however you do lose your crew. Throughout the game, you do bump into various characters from the original game, but Orhren is the only one you can recruit.
As you run through the game, you do meet some new and interesting characters which you can recruit, but there are only a handful (5 I believe). I realised half way through the game that I’d lost my one and only chance at recruiting a mage, which sucked due my main character being a rogue. My normal setup for the game is to have 2 tanks, myself and a mage as a healer. (So just a note, if your not a mage, and you want one with you throughout the game…the dude from the first 10 minutes of the game (Anders) is your one and only chance !
The game itself is quite a lot shorter that the original game, now granted this is only an add-on , but with my paying the same price for the add-on as I did for the main game itself, I’d expected a little more. I managed to beat the game is a little over 12 hours on Normal setting, and I did every side mission I could get my hands on. This however is longer that some games have taken me to beat, so I wasn’t too annoyed.
The game itself flows very much like the original game did. You start at Vigil’s Keep and become the commander of the Grey Wardens. As with the other game, you spend the majority of the game speaking to people and picking up plot points, making key decisions, then heading off to some “instance” type area, slaying everything in your path.
Now the storyline, I really liked this, there are rumours of “intelligent” Darkspawn, and they are starting to attack again, but this time quite tactically. As the story progresses, you find out more about the new breed of Darkspawn, and who/what is creating and controlling them (Apologies for the vagueness, but trying to be spoiler free).
All in all it was a decent add-on, I think it would have been nice if you were able to pull through some more of your original crew from the original game, however the fact that you got to chat with some of them was a nice touch.
At 3200 Microsoft points, I personally thought it was a little steep, but if you shop around, you can pick it up as cheap as £15.
Approx Time taken to beat – 12hours
Difficulty setting – Normal
Score – [Rating:4/5]
