Review – Dragon Age : Darkspawn Chronicles

May 18, 2010

New Dragon Age DLC ! Woot !

To be honest, after playing Dragon Age: Origins – Return to Ostagar, I was in 2 minds whether to play this or not, as I personally didn’t think much of Return to Ostagar. This was probably a lot to do with me playing it after the game was complete, and it wasn’t really beneficial to me or the storyline

I read the blurb on the DarkSpawn Chronicles, and thought it sounded different enough, so decided to go for it, and I’m so glad I did !

Now if you’ve not played/completed Dragon Age, please stop reading as the rest of this post will be riddled with spoilers.

The story goes like this….your character, the one you’ve played throughout Dragon Age, died during the Joining Ceremony, and the fight against the Darkspawn is lead by Alistair, personally I found Alistair quite annoying throughout the main game, so found the end of this….highly pleasing.

The game starts, and you are a Hurlock Vanguard (the big dude from the opening scenes from Dragon Age), and you’ve been given the power to be able to recruit fellow darkspawn. As with the main game, you can control up to 4 characters. These 4 characters can be Genlocks, Hurlocks, Shrieks and Ogres. As with the main game, each character has it’s advantages and disadvantages.

Obviously you get to play as the Darkspawn, and your mission is to take over the City of Denerim (instead of protect it, as in the main game). As you run through, you meet up with, and slay some familiar characters (ones that you’ve spent hours playing along side in the main game), until the concluding rooftop battle. Once your there, you get to assist the Arch Demon, instead of attempting to kill it.

I’ve just (about 10 minutes ago) completed this, and the adrenaline is still pumping !…what a fantastic, non stop, action packed DLC !

The thing that really sold it for me, was the fact that you get to start a new game (Darkspawn game), unlike Return to Ostagar where I had to load an old save game.

This is only 400 points, very much worth it for the couple of hours play you’ll get from it, I’m planning on playing it a few more times to pick up the other 2 achievements.

Approx Time taken to beat – 2hours

Difficulty setting – Normal

Score – [Rating:5/5]
