Duke Nukem Forever was horrible….the sexuality, the bad AI, the bad one liners…..but all in a good way. I felt to me like it was the early 90’s, sitting down on a Sunday afternoon and watching some cheesy film which in it’s day was amazing, but by todays standards…..not so good.
I read a lot of the negative reviews, and was put off to be honest, hence why I waited till it dropped below the £20 sweet price.
Ok, so before you read the rest, I have to confess, I was a massive fan of Duke Nukem 3D, and the 2 platformers before. I’ve beaten Duke 3D and all the add ons multiple times, and I spent every weekend of about 6 months playing multiplayer death match with a mate via a comm cable on our Pentium P75’s.
What I wanted / hoped for in DNF was more of the same, and I wasn’t disappointed. This game plays, looks, feels like a 12 year old game that somebody had pressed the HD button on. The game mechanics don’t quite work, the AI is horrible, the level structure is very old skool (run through a couple of rooms, and be met by an almost invincible end of level boss.
I’ve been gaming for nearly 30 years now, and seen how the gaming scene has evolved, gone are the day where you can just take your brain out and enjoy a game, most now require a lot of though, have ultra realistic graphics and sound, and a story that should be really in a blockbuster film. You get non of that with this game, quite simply Duke pissed on the aliens in Duke Nukem 3D, and they are back to take revenge….and it’s Duke’s job to stop them……that’s it, simple.
The levels varied from your typical old skool, first person shooter, where you would get to a certain point, things would spawn, you’d kill them, you’d move to the next point…and repeat, to driving levels, where you would get in your Duke monster trucks and run and jump over stuff.
I know it seems like I’m singing it’s praises, which in the majority I am, but there was a lot of sections I hated. Basically any time I got shrunk and had to run along the floor, shelves, beat up mice….I hated, running through the alien slim stuff, hated…..but the rest, simple honest just blow shit up fun !
Again, the multiplayer is fun, it’s simple, no perks, just pick up the weapons that are on the map, and kill the other people. There is a levelling system, however all you get is different outfits, and unlockables back at your pad.
This game won’t win any awards (well no positive ones), but for me it delivered…..I did rage quit a number of times, but the whole, I was a decent game. If you have an immature sense of humour, don’t mind a bit of sex and violence, and if your remember playing Duke Nukem 3D, and haven’t yet bought this….it’s a tenner now, and defiantly worth that.
