It’s fair to say that I quite enjoyed Far Cry 3, so an 80’s themed game built on the same engine sounded like it could be an awesome way to spend a couple of evenings.
The game attempts to give that 80’s Arcade game/action movie vibe with it’s witty one liners, the big guns, the predictable story line and the 16 bit cut scenes, however for me it just didn’t work. Some of the one liners were funny the first time you heard them, however hearing them multiple times when clearing out an area just got a little tiresome.
The Far Cry 3 game world was stunning, felt like a tropical island you would happily go and live on (apart from the loons), however this was dark, dismal, and very neon. Although the core mechanics where there, the weapons, the driving, the spotting, something just felt a little off to me.
The story is a simple good guy vs bad guy, throw in some scientists, an evil plan to rule the world, some action scenes and some dragons, and that about sums it up. I’m not sure if recently completing Saint Row 4 has set the bar quite high for ‘silly retro themed games’ but this for me just felt a little ‘meh.’ I can see what they tried to do, and maybe with a few beers, and a few mates around you could laugh at the jokes and the references, but solo, I was glad to get it finished and off the pile.
To be fair, Michael Biehn voicing the main guy, the very sexy 80’s music, and the Robocop style gun where kind of special, and some of the few things that made this game enjoyable, however didn’t feel enough to make up for the otherwise ugly looking, slow game.
All in all, it was ok, but felt like it tarnished the otherwise amazing Far Cry name.
