October 2008 seems so long ago now, but that’s the time I was bought an Xbox Elite for my birthday by the lovely C, and with it Gears of War…..guess what, I’ve finally finished it !
For the best part of my gaming life, I’ve been a PC games, and only really moved across to the console in early 2008. I initially bought a PS3 (for the bluray player), and as mentioned above, I was bought the Xbox later that year. Now I have to be honest, the transition from mouse and keyboard to controller was a slow and painful one, and attempting this with Gears was a hard task. I seem to remember rage quitting half way through Act 1 and there started my Xbox pile of shame.
Earlier this year I decided to start going through the pile and decided to give it another go, but this time with a couple of years experience with a controller under my belt and this time …co-op.
I have to admit, playing this game in co-op is better and worse all at the same time. It’s better because you have somebody to run through the story with you and experience some of the epic monster, come and resurrect you if you die, but on the downside….if you don’t work as a team, you can end up replaying certain sections over and over again.
So the co-op went well, me and a mate spent a couple of hours on a Sunday running through it, and managed to get to the end of Act 2…at which point we saved it and vowed to continue the next weekend. Weekends came and went, and we never finished it.
Months later, I bought C an Xbox for her birthday, and tried to convert her to the console. After a long couple of months getting her used to the controller by playing through Portal2, Halo3, Halo ODST it was finally time to play. It took the best part of 2 Sundays, but we finally got through the entire game on co-op..and you know what…I loved it !
Now unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Gears of War came out many many moons ago as an xbox exclusive game, and follows the story of a number of meat head fighting a small section of a very large 79 year war. It’s a futuristic third person “over the shoulder” game set on a planet called Sera, and essentially you spend the game fighting your way through hordes of Locust. As the story unfolds, you find a way of getting rid of them so you can have all the radioactive liquid (Imulsion) for yourself. Obviously I don’t want to give any spoilers as I know there are people out there who haven’t completed the game.
Now the game itself was released in November 2006 so even I picked it up a good 2 years after it was released, and then finally completed it nearly 3 years after that, however knowing what I know now, I really wish I’d have given it the time back then. The game was a roller coast ride, had some massive epic moments and quite frankly was one hell of a game.
Even though this game is nearly 5 years old, it still felt very fresh, and I now understand the origins of the “Cover System” that’s used so widely in games these days.
Awesome game, probably better in co-op than single player, but either way…awesome !
