It’s been many moons since I completed God of War: Chains of Olympus on the PSP, but now Sony have hit the HD button and added some trophies, I though it was time to play through it again, back in 2010 I played through God of War 1 and God of War 2 for the same reason.
I’ve always enjoyed the God of War series, and find myself getting engrossed in the storyline, so even on my second play through I didn’t skip the cut scenes, I did however play through it on Easy. There are a few reasons for this, it was a rental, I’d already played it before, there are 2 games on the disk and I really need to get this disk back.
As this game is a prequel to the others, your only get the 2 main weapons, the Blades of Chaos (Kratos’s primary weapons), and the Gauntlet of Zeus later in the game. You do pick up the additional addons of the Sun Shield, the Efreet and Light of Dawn, but these drain your magic and are more of a secondary weapon.
The game plays very much as it does on the PSP, the L1 + L2, and R1 + R2 buttons have the same functions, and the evade is now taken care of by the right thumbstick, I found everything very familiar.
The game itself looks very good, somebody had their finger firmly on the HD button when they upgraded this game. The sound was ok, but found that I’d occasionally get some strange ‘surround’ effects, where the sounds seemed to be overdone. I guess this was understandable as the game was originally designed for 2 speakers, and it was only the same as the occasional ‘glitches’ you get watching a 2 channel source through a pro-logic amp.
To be honest, there’s not much more I can say about this game without giving any spoilers, however I would say that if you have a PSP, a PSVita or a PS3, to defiantly pick this game up, I can’t see this game being more than a couple of quid on the PSP, it’s under a tenner on the Playstation Store, and the HD Remaster edition is around the £20 mark for both games.
