Rarely do I sit down and complete a game in one sitting, however this game seemed to be the exception. There were a number of reasons for this, a, it was a good game, b, I was playing it on easy, c, it was a rental and I needed to get it back, and d, I’ve just ordered Mass Effect 3, and really need to clear the decks.
As the other God of War games that have had the HD treatment, this game looks really good. I know Ghost of Sparta was released a few years after Chains on Olympus on the PSP, but it really shows. The lighting is noticeably better, and the graphics in general just look more detailed.
Unlike Chains of Olympus, I’ve not played this game before on the PSP, so it was a refreshing new story arc…..and that’s about as much as I’ll be covering as anything more would unfortunately be a spoiler fest.
What I did find interesting was the weapons used, granted you’ve got the standard ‘go to’ Blades of Athena, however a lot of other weapons you acquire through the other games don’t appear in this iteration, which is strange as the story seems to fit in around God of War 2 and 3. However you do pick up Arms of Sparta which is a spear and shield used for both close up and ranged attacks, as well as Thera’s Bane which is essentially a fire version of the Blades of Athena. These however a fueled by a recharging fire gauge.
Magic wise you get the “Eye of Atlantis”, “Scourge of Erinys”, and the “Horn of Boreas” and the relic “Poseidon’s Trident”. My person favourite was the ‘Scourge of Erinsys’, it’s essentially an orb that homes in on the enemy and gives them a good kicking.
As mentioned above, I completed the game in one sitting, granted it was on easy, but only took me around 6 hours. The game was very enjoyable and just sailed by like a good movie. I do only have the one criticism, for some reason Kratos seems to have lost the ability to swim, well swim at any kind of speed. There was a section towards the end of the game which just seemed to take far too long, and yeah, this was underwater. I’m pretty sure in the other games the swimming speed wasn’t so slow.
I’m happy to say that I’ve now completed all the God of War games, and really looking forward to the rumoured God of War 4.
