I remember way back in 2006, when Heavy Rain was announced at E3, and I’ve finally got to see what all the fuss was about, and all I can say is …. WOW !
The game follows the path of 4 characters, Ethan Mars, Madison Paige, Norman Jayden and Scott Shelby, and throughout the game you’ll see how they assist in finding the Origami Killer. Now I don’t really want to say much more about the story, as it would be only full of spoilers. I can however say, the storyline is fantastic, well written, well voiced, well motion captured and a complete roller coaster. The story way told in the way of any good thriller, like an episode of CSI, or the film Seven. I truly had no idea where is was going, or who the killer was right till the end.
The game plays in 2 systems, a 3rd person point and click ish adventure, crossed with quick time events. I was fortunate enough (Thanks to Antirealism for an awesome birthday present), to play the Move Edition. I am tempted however to go back and play this with the standard controller to see how different it is. I have to say, they did a really good job of thinking through the control system, for example, turning the ignition in the car, putting it in gear, and then setting were as you would imagine, hand forward, turn clockwise, then hand to the side, pull back, and then the trigger to accelerate away.
The game itself is very dark….and has a good balance or puzzles and action, one minute you can be searching through the house of a suspect, and the next you can be running for your life in a series of quick time events.
The visuals were amazing, and extremely believably, the time and effort that went into the graphics really paid off.
Now the thing that really blew my mind was, there was no wrong answers, no wrong decisions, just play the game how you like, and continue. From my understanding, the game will always end in the same point, however who with, and what happens are all up to you, for example, you can enter a scene, start some dialog, and then just leave if you like. This will however have a knock on affect later on, as the information you would have gained from asking the questions you would have asked, you won’t have, making the later parts of the game harder.
So, if you think it’s so good, why only a 4 ?….don’t get me wrong, the game was very good, story amazing, sound and visuals, stunning….it was just on occasions the PS Move would fail to pick up some of the quick time event movements, meaning I would end up falling, or getting hit, or something like, which at times could become a little frustrating. Now the game being as it is, you just pick yourself up, and carry on running, but it was just a little annoying.
All in all, a fantastic game, and suggest anybody who like Trillers, and has a PS3 should get this.
