To be honest I’m not really sure what to think about Homefront, on one hand it’s a truly epic game, on the other it’s just kinda….”Meh”.
So first lets start with the good bits, graphics…stunning, gameplay…not bad at all, story…again not bad. I guess that thing that really stands out in this game is the environment your in. It was very reminiscent of Half Life 2….just replace the Combine Soldiers with Korean Soldiers and your away. I was actually quite moved by the beginning of the game, you are on a bus, you can’t get up so your just taking in the scenery. Unfortunately the scenery is men, woman and children being brutally murdered at the side of the road you were going down.
As the game progresses you become part of a resistance movement, and the entire game covers one missions. Now unlike other FPS games out there, the story was very linear, however this wasn’t a bad thing…it made the story very easy to follow, but this did make the game quite short. Each of the missions was unique enough not to get too bored, and you actually cared about the characters.
The game did have it’s annoyance though, like one section where you have to “walk” around a camp between missions, for no reason apart from giving you a little back story, you can go up to the people there and talk to them, but you get a random sentence which doesn’t really add anything to the story (well didn’t for me). There were a number of these “walk” moments, it was almost like the devs said…”Nope, we won’t tell the story in FMV…we’ll make them “walk” through sections and we’ll spell out the story to them”. The game also had a lot of epic moments, however this seemed too much of a good thing….I personally like the music to increase, when things really start getting going, however with this it was epic music, and epic explosions all of the time, which got a little boring after a while.
The game did have some nice touches, or example the Goliath. It’s essentially an attack drone, but in 6 wheeled buggy form, that will automatically attack the enemy, but under your control will also fire rockets at your targets.
I have to say, if you’ve not yet played this game, or have started but not yet completed it, it’s worth getting to the last mission, it’s quite epic, and for the current price of £13.99, I’ve heard the multiplayer is amazing !
All in all a reasonable game, I think if it hadn’t have tried to be so different, so epic, then it could have been a 5/5 game.
