In an attempt to clear some smaller games of the pile before we hit silly season, I decided to drop back into the work of inFamous. Having picked up a the inFamous Collection in one of the Playstation sales, I managed to pick up the inFamous PS3 games pretty cheap, and having loved inFamous and inFamous 2, I was looking forward to getting my hands on this.
The game starts off with Zeke attempting to chat up a girl at a bar, and tells the story of how Cole defeated the main boss in the upcoming story. This worked quite well, as after each story mission, Zeke narrated what is happening, as if he’s telling the story to the girl.
Similar to inFamous 2, the game starts which an epic event which results in a 8 hour countdown timer starting that ends at dawn. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say, that this standalone DLC is Vampire themed, and you can probably work out the ‘dawn event’.
The story is set in the ever familiar New Marais, and set during the celebration of Pyre Night, which to me felt a lot like halloween. The streets are littered with people in costumes, stage shows, performers and music being played.
Cole in the first few minutes gains some additional vampire abilities, however this seems to remove the majority of his previous powers, or the the ability to make morality choices…or so it felt. This for me broke the game, as it didn’t seem to matter what I did, it didn’t seem to affect my powers of morality path.
For the power abilities, there are still upgrades, however these is simply, ‘kill x amount of y, to unlock z’, and there is no choice of what to unlock (apart from do or don’t kill the things that level you), or the ability to switch out your powers once upgraded.
The gameplay itself felt pretty hollow, do a mission (usually in the catacombs), pop out, do a few side missions (which were simply ‘kill a few vampires to stop them attacking somebody, or hunt for x before the timer runs out), then back to a mission. Half way through the game, there were two forced UGC (User Generated Content) missions, but by user ‘Sucker Punch’, both of which I felt detracted from the main story flow.
I have to say, the combat in this felt off, most encounters would put you up against a small amount of grunts, and a few wall climbing gunner. The gunners were almost impossible to hit when you’re being attached by the grunts, and seem to really knock you’re health for a six, meaning you spend most of the combat sucking on a lamp post for dear life.
All in all, this DLC was ok at best, and for the current price of £7.99 on the store, I’d wait for this to come down, a lot, before dropping on it.
