We were lucky enough to get the ultimate edition of Injustice : God Among Us as part of the December 2014 offering of Playstation plus.
I have to be honest, I love the concept of fighting games, the skills, the powerful moves, the combos, however being in my early forties, all I can seem to accomplish is ‘mash buttons, hope the other guys bar goes down faster than mine’. This is why I don’t tend to play at lot from this genre.
With this said, Injustice : God Among Us ticked a few boxes that other fighting games don’t seem to do. It had DC comic books characters in it and an immersive story.
The gameplay itself seems quite generic for the genre. You have health bars, when they get to zero, you lose. As you fight you also have a type of power bar, once this gets to the top, you can unleash a power move and take about half of your opponents heath, and that in a nutset was it for six hours.
However the thing that set this apart from other fighting games for me was the presentation. You would get is a couple of minutes of cutscene, voice acted by some very familiar names (Troy Baker, Kevin Conroy, Adam Baldwin, Tara Strong and Nolan North), and this would seamlessly transition into the fight. You would then spend a couple of minutes mashing the buttons, and you’d be off into another cutscene. Once complete, I felt like I’d been watching an amazing CGI movie for the past couple of hours.
The story itself was great, containing the majority of the DC characters you know and love, each with their own special abilities, which once triggered would stop the action and give you a mini cut scene as you decimated your opponent.
If you’re even slightly interested in the DC universe, I would highly recommend this games, and if fighting games aren’t you’re thing, I’d have a look on somewhere like YouTube to see if anybody has uploaded just the cutscenes.
