It’s not often I blog about free games (pay to win), however this game has got so deep under my skin, I feel it deserves it. Now Jetpack Joyride isn’t a new game, and has been out on the on iOS, Android, BlackBerry for quite some time now, and I believe it could also be a Facebook game. Strange thing is, I had Jetpack Joyride on the iPad for a couple of months, but only played it a handful of times and found it simply another endless runner. In December it was releases as a free game on the Playstation Vita and suddenly I was hooked.
As mentioned above, Jetpack Joyride is an endless running, and the only control is a simple press/tap on the screen (front or rear) to navigate your character (Barry) through various obstacles (Zappers, Missiles, Lazerbeams). The story (if you can call it that) is simply…you are Barry, and you’ve stolen a jet pack from a laboratory….and you know what, it’s all the game needs.
As with a lot of these games, the gameplay is quite simple, test your hand-eye co-ordination and get as far as you can to beat your friends on the leaderboard. Doing this over and over again can get a little tiresome, so to vary it up, there are (what’s becoming pretty standard for these types of games) three challenges to do, ranging from ‘high 5 scientists’ to something more challenging like ‘have a near miss with 100 zappers’. Some have to be done in the same runthrough, some can be accumulative.
As you progress, you pick up gold coins which can be used in the in-game store called ‘The Stash’, which can be used to purchase various upgrades, utilities and even different jetpacks. In addition to the gold coins, there are random floating ‘Spin Tokens’, which when collected can be used at the end of your run in a slot machine mini game, than can either give you additional cash, a boost at the end, a boost on your next run, or even a second change to continue where you left off.
The third collectable in the game are these rainbow coloured squares which unlock one of a variety of vehicles to assist you through the run. I guess the most realistic one is the Hog, which is essentially a large motorcycle, but also equips you with a shotgun, or to something a little more random like a teleporter which allows you to jump all over the screen. There are six vehicles in total, Bad As Hog (the bike), Crazy Freaking Teleporter, Gravity Suit, Lil’ Stomper (a high jumping mech), Mr. Cuddles (a large Chinese dragon than shoots flames from his mouth), and finally the Profit Bird (a metallic bird), all of which handle very differently and take a while to master them.
This game for me has recently got me out of a gaming funk I was in, with most runs lasting somewhere between thirty seconds and a minute (for me anyway), it’s the perfect throne game, however it’s also has the ‘Just one more go’ factor, meaning you could be there for a while. Throw a couple of PSN Trophies in and a decent leaderboard, and you’ll be playing this for hours, and for the price of free…it’s a no brainer.
Approx Time taken to beat – still going!
Difficulty setting – Normal
Score – [Rating:5/5]
