Back in May of 2012, I finally finished the main story of Mass Effect 3, with only one piece of DLC under my belt (From Ashes). Once you complete the main story, you are magically transported back in time and onto the bridge of the Normandy, with the final mission on your personal terminal as a ‘mission to do’. This gave me the clue that additional DLC would be coming out, that took place before the end of the main story.
Once you’ve purchased the Leviathan DLC, it pops up on your personal terminal as a message from Admiral Hackett, asking you to pop to the Citadel to go and chat with a Doctor. With my normal ‘no spoiler policy’ in place, that’s as far as I’ll go with the story.
The DLC itself felt a little different from normal mission, normally they are go to location, shoot thing, go to another location shoot thing, go to a final location…shoot bigger things!…however this was different. You start in a lab looking for clue, which felt a lot like one of the CSI games. Get clue, use here, find location, then off you pop.
The location missions felt very samey, a lab, a sandy baron wasteland, and then a very nice looking final mission, all with popping back to the Citadel for more clues in-between mission.
Now, it’s not until I play a game like this, I realise how bad of an OCDGamer I am. I had to stop myself looking in every nook and cranny for ammo, datapad, and anything shiny. I found myself ignoring the action, and heading in the other direction to ensure I hadn’t missed anything. Same went for when I was piloting the Normandy between galaxies. I noticed there were a few systems that I hadn’t fully scanned to a 100% , and took me all my will power to leave them behind. This also seemed to happen when I visited the Citadel, when you dock, you have the option to go to the mission point, or to the normal locations…at least twice I found myself going to every location to try and spark up a conversation with….somebody, however my previous OCD and cleaned up all missions.
Again, trying to be spoiler free, but the DLC is quite slow, nothing really new, well not until the last level. Yes you do have your normal duck, cover, shoot sections, however there’s a great section toward the end which allows you to do something quite unique.
The DLC does all the building up to a glorious battle, but doesn’t seem to fulfill. There was however a decent storyline payoff, which I found quite worthwhile.
All in all, it wasn’t bad, when I’d finished playing it, I was on quite a high, but that might have just been because I was back in control of Commander Shepard in the fantastic Mass Effect universe. For 800 points, it’s worth picking up.
