Medal of Honor is a strange one, it wasn’t a bad game, there just felt to be something missing. The game had amazing graphics, great sound effects and a decent storytelling…but something wasn’t quite right.
As with a lot of the recent military based first person shooters, you take control of multiple characters throughout, to get slightly different sides of the story. In this case you switch between a DEVGRU operator called Rabbit, and a sniper called Deuce.
Now one thing I did like about this game was how the story was told. The story itself takes place in Afghanistan in 2002, and the transitions from one mission to the other and pretty seamless. As an example, I found myself dug in attempting to take out the enemy, while trying not to get your head removed by a gunner nest. At a point in the mission, Apaches gunships get called in to take out the gunner nest, which then concluded the current mission. The next mission the starts you you manning the gunner turret in the very same Apache. There also seems to be a continuous day/night cycle which was quite refreshing, instead of the usual chopping and changing you get in most game.
As mentioned above, the graphics were good, very good in fact, and sometimes even jaw droppingly good. The sound itself was also good, realistic sound effects, loud explosions that rocked my house, and great vehicle noises.
So this is the strange bit, everything about would suggest that this is a 5/5 game….but it wasn’t, there was just something missing. This game has taken me over a month to complete, because it’s just not captivated me enough to continue playing. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that the checkpoints were quite far apart and ment at times I’d have to play the same 5 minutes over and over again until I learnt where the sniper was, or the fact that the background music on “epic” scenes didn’t really move me, or the game was so linear, you couldn’t explore at all. I found myself playing for an hour or so, get killed, think…”meh”, and play something else. For me the game just doesn’t have the “wow factor”, the thing that makes you think about the game when your meant to be working, or make you want to play it as soon as you walk in through the door. This is why I’m only giving it a 3.
All in all, it’s a reasonable game, maybe somebody who loves their “modern combat” type games will love this, however for me it didn’t totally float my boat.
