Orcs Must Die! was a game I picked up last summer. It’s rare that I download and play a demo, only to drop on it before the demo has ended.
The gameplay is not to dissimilar to a tower defense game in the way that you have waves of enemies, of which you take out with various weapons and traps. These range from tar pits (to slow them down), to blade walls, to arrow walls, as as you progress even sniper turrets.
The game starts you off very gently with a single enemy door, a single corridor, and only land based enemies which was really quite easy. However as the levels progress, you go up to multiple entrances, multiple paths, a large variety of enemies included large armoured Orges with big spiky flaming clubs and flying creatures which make you have to think about your tactics
Before the level starts, you are presented with a list of available weapons/traps, and once you’ve started that particular level, you’re stuck with your choice. I had to restart a couple of levels as I’d totally made the wrong selection choice.
In addition to the traps, you have a number of weapons, a crossbow, a sword and as you progress you get additional weapons like the wind belt, the flame ring, and the lightening ring. In addition to those, there are a number of environmental items you can use as weapons, such as chandeliers, spiked logs, and cauldrons filled with lava.
The game has a lot of charm, the voice over work is humourous, the graphics look kind of WOW’ish (World of Warcraft), and all in all, it was a fun little game. There was a story thrown in there, but it didn’t really have too big a part in the game.
The last couple of levels were quite challenging, but were fun. If you are a glutton for punishment, there is a nightmare mode…which I assume would be really quite hard.
If you like Tower Defense style games, this is one to pick up.
