As I enjoyed Red Dead Redemption so much I decided to start on the Undead Nightmare straight away, which is not something I normally do. I would suggest if your going to play the DLC, you complete the main game first otherwise they’ll be a number of spoilers, and you may not get some of the initial gags.
As the title would suggest, this DLC is set in the Red Dead Redemption universe, however the Undead are swarming the land, and you as John Marston get the job of figuring out what’s going on and hopefully put a stop to it. Now I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the zombie genre and honestly thought I’d be quitting after a 20 minutes play, but I stuck with it through to the end and actually quite enjoyed it.
Interestingly, the entire world is open to you, which initially worried me as I though I’d have to drop another thirty hours into the game, but luckily it was only a third of that time. The world although familiar, it’s now gloomy, misty and looks like something out of a B movie horror film.
The gameplay is quite simple, a lot of the towns you are already familiar with have become overrun with zombies, and if you want to be able to save your game there, you will need to clear out the zombie. Sounds simple right? Not really, not when ammo is now very rare, and the only sure way of taking out a zombie is with a headshot. Luckily, when you get to a town there are normally a couple of survivors, help them out with ammo and they’ll help you kill off the zombie and free the town. Once freed, the weather changes and the sun comes out (which I thought was a nice touch), and this then allows you go exploring in the attempt to find some ammo, and save the game. Once you’re done, simply move on to the next town, save it and continue. It’s probably worth noting that over time these will get attacked again, and if you don’t head back to help them, the town will be once again overrun.
As well as the town freeing missions, there is obviously the main story arc and a number of side missions. It’s probably worth noting here that you have no option but to do EVERY side mission. If you don’t you will simply get to a point in the main story mission where your contact won’t appear. These missions are normally fetch which did feel a bit of a grind, however the payoff was usually some type of interesting weapon. My personal favourite was the blunder buster, a ridiculously over powered shotgun that used zombie parts for ammo, and would easily turn even the the hardest zombie into a red mist.
All in all, not bad, personally didn’t like having to do every side mission, and some of the fetch missions felt like they were added to simply pad out, however the DLC is currently selling for cheap, so it might be worth picking up.
