Many moons ago now when I heard there was going to be a Resistance game released for the Vita, my OCD kicked in and felt I needed to play this, and the other 2 games before playing the Vita version. After a little googling, I found that sat nicely between Resistance Fall of Man, and Resistance 2.
First thing I want to say about this game is…it’s hard!, very hard and unforgiving at times. This probably explains why it’s taken me 5 months to complete it, and it’s officially the game I’ve rage quit the most, with LittleBigPlanet coming in a close second.
You play as James Grayson, a Lieutenant in the British Royal Marines, who basically goes through hell, and ends up with a personal vendetta against the chimera (the enemy in the Resistance universe). As with Resistance: Fall of Man you partake in a series of missions that take you all over Europe. Each of which take you up against waves and waves of Chimera.
As for the story, I’ll leave it there, however you can read the entire thing at the wiki page. I can however tell you that it’s a very well told story, with twists and turns which concludes in a spectacular way. There was however a few things that took me out of the experience.
Firstly was the accents, they were horrible, one of the characters was a french lady, who wouldn’t have sounded out of places on ‘Allo ‘Allo!.
Secondly, the scripting, there were a lot of needless insults thrown around, which didn’t add to the story, and just felt out of place. For no reason at all, Grayson would should ‘you stupid dwarf’, ‘you damn frog’, etc etc, it was almost like there was a random insult algorithm running in the game to give you some variety.
The third had to be the controls, I really struggled playing this on the PSP. They attempted a twin stick 3rd person shooter with a device that only had 1 stick. The left stick was used for your movement, and the view was controlled using the X, Square, Triangle and Circle as the right stick, which did work once you go used to it, but so needed another stick. As the usual buttons were being used, you had the likes of zoom in the up D-Pad, reload on left, weapon select on the right. I actually spent the majority of the game flicking through the weapons one at a time when selecting, and found by accident that if you held down the button, up popped a weapons select menu, unfortunately this was literally 2 hours from the end.
The control issues did get a little easier once I download the game on my Vita and enabled the 2nd thumbstick, however this did leave the zoom, reload and weapon select on the D-Pad, I instinctively kept hitting the square button to reload, which just turned me left a little. The setting that worked best for me was the sensitivity maxed out of both axis, and the acceleration at around 75%, this gave me a smooth twin stick feel.
This game also had a few little Brucy Bonuses if you had a copy of Resistance 2 kicking around, you could enable ‘infected mode’ which allowed you to play the game again, but with Grayson infected, which allowed him to breath underwater as well as regenerate health. Secondly, you can control the game, on your PSP using the PS3 controller, however it removes any aim assists and ramps up the difficulty…which is not something I wanted to do. These features unfortunately only working in the PSP and not the Vita. I did try ‘infecting’ the game on the PSP and transferring the save game across, but this didn’t seem to work.
Now I mentioned above, I found this game hard, maybe the controls played a part, or the smaller screen, the lesser graphics, but one thing that didn’t help was the checkpoints…they were brutal!. I often found myself replaying the same 10 minute section over and over again until I’d learnt the order of mobs, and which weapon worked best…and I was playing this on EASY!
This game was an experience for me, it’s the first, and last shooter I played on the PSP, and probably one of the most frustrating ones too..as much as I enjoyed being beaten up by the game, I’m also glad the game has come to an end, as I can now free up the space on my vita and start on Resistance 2.
Approx Time taken to beat – 15 hours
Difficulty setting – Easy
Score – [Rating:4/5]
