Resogun has been my PS4 ‘go to’ game of choice, as it’s very quick to pick up and play, and looks and sounds stunning.
The premise is simple, you control a ship, you blow stuff up, and once all the enemies are dead, you fight the end of level boss, and you move on to the next level. Do this for five levels and you get to see the end credits roll. I wish however it was as easy as it sounds, as it took me a fair few attempts, on rookie difficulty to finally see the end credits roll.
Your main weapon can be upgraded throughout the game by flying over a power-up, and the upgrade (I think) is then carried through to the next level with you. In addition you have bombs, which wipe out everything on the screen, and an upgradable overdrive which will give you a very powerful weapon for a short amount of time.
To add replayability to the game, each level comes with a leaderboard. Simply surviving to the end of the level won’t get you anywhere near the top, so the additional mechanic of ‘saving the last humans’ has been added. At defined times throughout the level, a group of enemies called Keepers pops on the screen for a limited time, if you kill them all, they will release one of the ten humans on the screen. These humans then need to be picked up and taken to safety. Doing so will give you a form of bonus from weapons to bonus score points. While trying to save the humans, you also need to keep an eye on your multiplier, as if you don’t kill anything for a short amount of time, the multiplier is reset.
The is a very fun game, and I’m currently trying to get through it on the next difficulty setting.
