Even though I purchased Saints Row 4 on a last gen console, I never got around to playing it. So when a remastered current gen version was announced, including all DLC and the new Gat out of Hell, I took the opportunity to drop back into Steelport. You may remember, I loved Saints Row: The Third, and that’s still up there in my top ten favorite coop experiences, this game has now made it onto that list too.
I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say (just watch any trailer for the game) that Volition have taken an already existing quirky world and added a whole load more crazy. The entire game is based in a computer simulation of Steelport from Saints Row: The Third, and with this story plot, they’ve removed the ‘normality’ limits. Super powers, sure, popping in and out of homages to many different video games and films, not a problem.
I played through the entire of the story missions in coop with foxhounder01, and took on all the side quests and challenges on my own (well most of them). The story itself is interesting, full of familiar faces, locations and some very humorous nods to many different game different games and films. I honestly lost count, but I know I genuinely laughed out loud at a lot of the references.
I will say, if you just pick up this game to do only the story missions, yes it will be a giggle, but it’ll be over way too soon. There are numerous side missions to do, and 66 challenges to complete in the main game. Some of the earlier challenges are simply ‘kick 10 aliens’, however the ones towards the end are ‘get x amount of kill with weapon x’. These weapons are typically some of the newer weapons in the game such as the Dubstep gun (possibly my favorite weapon from any game, ever). A quick tip at this point, if you plan on completing all the challenges, its going to require you to switch through your weapons. You will get some kills during the story missions, I found I spent many hours farming at the end. I’d suggest having a read through the challenges, and keep switching.
Like with Saints Row: The Third, there are a number of activities you can do through the game, there’s the welcome return of the insurance fraud, and mayhem missions, however new ones are added with the new virtual universe. I’ll be honest, some of these activities were extremely hard to solo, and found foxhounder01 and I would have to spend a couple of sessions cleaning these up.
If I do have any negative to say about the game, it would be that the super powers you gain early during the game negate the need for a vehicle. I do remember in Saints Row: The Third having a garage full of pimped vehicles with custom paint jobs, but didn’t feel the need to do this in this game. The only real benefit was you’d get a kind of sat nav pointing you in the right direction if you put down a waypoint marker, however, when you can leap buildings in a single bound, I’d find ‘as the crow flies’ was always the quickest route.
I’m also quite proud to say, that this games got me my first platinum trophy. Because I enjoyed the universe so much, remote play worked very well, I spent over 40 hours in the game to ding the last trophy gaining me the platinum.
All in all, a really fun game, a perfect two player coop game with some hilarious moment.
