Spec Ops: The Line was never on my radar, and if it hadn’t have come to Playstation Plus, I would have never have played it…and what a crime that would have been. I’ll be honest, seeing the cover I wrongly assumed it was just another military shooter, possibly a COD or Battlefield clone, but I was wrong.
The game is set in the near future, and it’s an over the shoulder, cover based, squad, military shooter, that felt a lot like Gears of War, or Mass Effect. As well as controlling your soldier named Martin Walker (voiced by Nolan North), you can also highlight targets for your two squad mates to attack.
The game is set in a sandstorm swept Dubai and looks absolutely gorgeous. You’re sent to Dubai on a reconnaissance mission, and with that a very interesting story unfolds. Attempting to be spoiler free, I’ll leave the story there, however it has the be the highlight of this game, it kept be hooked wanting to know what was going to happen next.
Gameplay as mention above is a cover based, third person shooter, which worked really well. I believe for the majority of the game you have at least two squad mates with you, who you can use to flush out an enemy. I guess if I have any grips about this game, I would have liked to have been able to direct them to cover similar to Mass Effect. I played through the game on normal and only got stuck a handful of times, so it’s possible this game could have been easily done in less time.
If you have this on Playstation Plus, and haven’t yet dipped into it, I’d suggest putting aside six to eight hours as the story is amazing and well worth the time spent.
