Toy Soldier : Cold War is essentially the modern day version of Toy Solders. It plays very similar in the way you have various waves of enemies attempting to enter your toybox, however instead of the World War One tanks and vehicles, you have modern Heavy Tanks, Jet fighters, laser sighted rocket launchers and soldiers on buggies.
As with the first, you do have a number of vehicles at your disposal, including attack helicopters and heavy tanks, however these only last a limited time due to battery power. You are able to drive/fly around to pick up a number of batteries located around the map which extend your time in the vehicle. On occasions, there will be an enemy with a red star on them, killing them with fire off a random perk that can be called in at any part during the remainder of the mission. The first one was a Rambo type soldier, which allowed you to take control and run around the battlefield, shooting everything in site, while shouting lines from the First Blood film. As you progress through the game, these upgrade through airstrikes right up to nukes.
This version seems to incorporate more social functionality, at specific points during the level a leaderboard would pop up with the likes of ‘Number of attack helicopters destroy’, or ‘Ammunition Deployed’ or ‘Turrets Lost’, with a list of the top 5 friends above you. You’re also presented with a similar leaderboard upon completing each level. Additionally there is co-op in Cold War, allowing you to team up with a mate and play through the levels, and even a survival mode.
The game itself seemed a little easier and shorter than the previous game, I managed to get through the story missions in around six hours, and only have to restart a level a few times. A lot of this was down to the ‘wave rewind’ function, will allowed you to do exactly that. If you have a particually bad wave, you could jump back to an earlier wave, and start playing again from there. This came in especailly helpful with the final boss, who I had to rewind a few times to understand his pattern.
All in all a cracking little game, and they fixed one of my biggest bugbears from the first Toy Soldiers game by reducing the loading time by a considerable amount.
Approx Time taken to beat – 6 hours
