I never realised just how many tower defence sytle games I had in my collection until I started the Year of Shame Challenge. The good thing is, even though they have their similarities, they all have thier own uniqueness too. The thing that Toy Soldiers brings to the table is the feeling you are playing in a Toy Box, on a table in the middle of a room. Although your focus is on the main plastic looking map, zooming out and looking around you can see every day objects in the background. To continue the toy box theme, the enemy units are are those little miniaturized Toy Soldiers, accompandied by various World War One themed veichles, from tanks to Red Baron aircrafts.
Toy Soldier is essentially a tower defence game in the fact that there are a set number of waves of varing enimies, invading from the enemies toy box into your. You do have specific points where you can add a weapon to stop them, however there are only a handful of these on the board, meaning you have to think a litte to ensure you have the correct coverage. In addition to the enemy waves, there are also enemy weapon placement, which will attempt to take out you weapons, however take out theirs, and you can drop a weapon on that spot too giving you greater coverage.
As you can imagine, the weapons you deploy are World War One themed, so you get the likes of a machine gun nest, mortars and howitzers. If you don’t think your men are doing a good enough job, you can simply take control of the deployment and control it in a 3rd person view. As well as the fixed emplacements, there can be a number of veichles around the map you can control such as tanks, biplanes and bombers, which really mixes things up and makes stragagising key.
Once again, another cracking game off the pile, and well worth playing, if I have one critism, it was the load times, they were around 30-45 seconds a level, and this was the case even if starting a level again.
