Transformer : War For Cybertron is a game I rented last year, didn’t really enjoy and returned to the rental company without completing. Recently, the sequel Transformers: Fall of Cybertron was release and getting some glowing reviews, so decided to make the 2 games my final purchases before the Year of Shame challenge started.
I’m already finding with the challenge I have a change in mindset regarding gaming, I’m no longer feeling pressured to complete or discard the current game I’m playing so I can get on with the next game…this is actually quite relaxing.
Anyway, back to the game. After a little research I read that the games story is set before the events of the 1984 Transformers Movie and set on Cybertron (as the title would suggest). I think this was something that originally put me off, as the Transformers weren’t transforming into the Earth vehicles I knew and loved, however since my original attempt at playing this, I’ve become quite a Transformers fanboy, and I’m fine with the Cybertronian vehicles . I will be spoiler free, so all I can really say is if you’re a fan of Transformers G1 then there’s a lot of good back story in this.
The game itself is a solid 3rd person shooter, with the addition of being able to transform into vehicle mode. The games controls are as you’d expect from this type of games apart from the vehicle controls. For some reason the steering left/right controls are on the right thumbstick and forward/backward on the left…this took a little getting used to.
The game is clearly designed as a 3 player co-op, as every mission has you plus 2 other AI controlled character. Upon starting a mission, you get to choose from 1 of 3 character, each having it’s own special class ability, and the 2 you don’t pick join you. One of the downsides of playing this solo, was the fact that all the enemies target you, playing in co-op would have made things a little fairer. This wasn’t too much of a problem with the run of the mill enemies, however when you got to a boss battle, you were the one being targeted by everything they had to offer.
At this point it’s worth discussing the bosses, there were loads of them! Granted not all of them were as epic as the final boss (which I rage quit while battling), but there were some decent tough bosses scattered throughout the game…however once you learnt the sequence, they went down fairly easy. One thing that assisted with the Boss battle was the very generous save points, once you’d taken out X on the boss, it saved, then once you’d done Y it saved, making it nowhere near as painful as it could have been.
Visually the game looked good, and I’m assuming it used some flavour of the Unreal engine, however with metal vehicles in the surroundings of metallic Cybertronian surroundings could look a little samey at times.
All in all, a decent enough game, and now looking forward to playing Fall of Cybertron.
