Transformers : Fall of Cybertron was one of my final purchases before the Year of Shame Challenge started, and it’s taken me until now to get to it. The game is set after the events of War For Cyberton and plays towards the known story arc of the Transformers cartoon series from the 80s. As a Transformers fan, there were many reference to the old series, the Dinobots, the Insecticons,Metroplex and many many other. There’s even a nice little treat for fans of the original 1984 Transformers movie at the end.
The gameplay itself seemed a very smooth and polished version of War For Cybertron, and graphically it seemed tweaked in comparison. I seem to remember on of my bugbears from the first was the shiny metal graphics seemed to look a little samey, in this, it often looked like Bulletstorm, which in my eyes was a major improvement. There were a number of great cinematic events, which then left said even out of focus the background while you played, which I found a really nice touch.
The weapons are similar to the previous games, Cybertronion version of Rocket Launchers, Snipers, Assault Rifles, and some other fun stuff. In addition you can buy perk which allow a one hit sentinel drone, or disposable shield. You are also able to upgrade your weapons, allowing you to make your chosen weapon slightly more powerful or accurate than it previously was, as well as being able to add permanent perks to yourself. I know I initially spent my credits on shield improvements and health upgrades allowing me to fly through the game. Good thing is, there perks/upgrades you buy get transferred between all characters you play, even when switching between the Autobots and Decepticons.
As normal, without being spoilery, you play half of the game as the Autobots, and other half as the Decepticons in an endless battle for the control of Energon. As with the first, you take control of various well known characters, all with their own special ability. The game itself was very fast paced, and felt like an 8 hour adrenaline rush, there were very few moments in the game where you could catch a breath (granted there’s a pause button), and felt a little shattered completing this in two seasons. The game also felt a little too easy on the normal difficulty as there were a number of sections you could simply run through without the worry of having your shield and health taken out.
There were a few annoyances with the game, the lever pulling and the door prying, they were massively overused. It seemed every area you entered, you have to pull a leave (by pressing X, then pulling back on the LS), or prying doors which simply was press X, then you got a little bit of animation as your character opened pried open the door or pulled the lever. Personally I didn’t feel these added anything to the game, and became quite annoying after a while.
All it all, not a bad action game, less levers and this may have got a five star rating.
Approx Time taken to beat – 10 hours
Difficulty setting – Normal
Score – [Rating:4/5]
