Words cannot describe just how much I enjoyed this game, which will make reviewing the game hard work…but I’ll try.
As with all Uncharted games, you follow the story of Nathan Drake and supporting characters through a rollercoaster adventure which takes you all over the globe. The game series is known for being visually stunning, however this one took it to the next level, I lost count of the number of times I swore in amazement at what I was seeing. This game felt like Sony flipped the bird at other console manufactures and said “Look what the PS3 is capable of”, it felt like played through a 10 hour tech demo.
As well as the stunning visuals, I was also treated to the glorious 7.1 LPCM audio which was the perfect combination, it was like watching and listening to a triple A blockbuster film.
As you would come to expect with the vocal talents of Nolan North, Claudia Black, Emily Rose, Richard McGonagle, the voice acting was outstanding, this together with the lifelike character animation make the story very immersive. It’s rare I play a game these days and think…just one more level, but I just couldn’t stop playing this game.
The gameplay consisted of mainly puzzles and gunplay, and seemed a little more straightforward than the previous games. The puzzles didn’t seem as hard, however that might be due to the fact I’m used to the Uncharted puzzle mechanic (check the journal, work out the puzzle), and if you do get stuck, there’s always the hint button. The gunplay was solid, with a great cover system and a variety of weapons to keep things interesting. As well as the main puzzle/gunplay elements, there were a number of action sequences that stood out for me, the initial bar fight in a London pub, fighting on the back of a cargo plane, and fighting your way through a convoy on horseback through a desert, all of which blew me away.
Many locations are visited , taking you to different parts of the globe, from London, to France, to the Arabian Peninsula, and many others in between. Each location was beautifully rendered, and it was hard to see the join between cut scenes and gameplay. On a number of occasions I sat watching a cut scene, only to move the thumbstick and realise I actually had control.
Normally with every game I play there is something that I don’t get on with, or find annoying, however this games seems to be the exception. I loved every minute of this games and was truly gutted to see the credits role at the end, I would have happily play for another 10 hours.
My only regret with this game is I don’t have a 3D TV and would have loved to see this game in all it’s glory.
Put simply, if you have a PS3 and haven’t played Uncharted 3, go and buy it now, you owe it to yourself.
