Having really enjoyed Wolfenstein: The New Order, I was rather excited by the announcement of a standalone DLC The Old Blood.
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a prequel to The New Order an follows the story of B.J. Blazkowicz (the dude you control in the main game).
The game it split into two distinct stories, over a total of 8 chapters, both of which end with good ol’ boss battles.
Gameplay wise, although you have the option to approach any situation how you like, the games preferred method seems to be stealth, and punishes you for going in all guns blazing. This for me became a problem early on and made me rage quit, as my idea of stealth is only throwing in one grenade. There were on a few occasions some over the top action moments where I’d empty clips into entire hordes of enemies, but personally felt these were few and far between and could have done with a load more of them.
Wanting to be spoiler free, the DLC gives a little more backstory on The New Order, and even leads up the events of it. I guess if you haven’t yet played The New Order, I’d personally play The Old Blood first as I think it would flow a little better.
The expansion took a little under seven hours to complete, and for the current price of around the £15 mark, this is great value for money, and if you don’t mind a bit of stealth in your life, it’s well worth the cash. On a personal note, I think the standalone DLC model really works, as I tend to rent most of my games, meaning I no longer have the main game in my possession when DLC is released.
